BACKGROUND AND MUSINGS
My father was a machine shop teacher who owned his own machine shop -- I spent my childhood in this Wisconsin shop. The radio filled the air with the charmed twang of country music --WAXX Chippewa Falls Wisconsin (the other Nashville according to the DJ's). The air was thick with the metallic scent of metal lathe fillings and oil. A large drawer of machinists rulers was my toy chest ( I would always go for the 12 inch one). Above the large bench was a huge round wall clock that ticked loudly out of time with the crying sounds of Patsy Cline and Hank Williams. My dad bought me a used Silvertone electric guitar from a vocational school metal shop student who needed money badly. After all these years I now realize that the 12 inch ruler was basically my guitar neck with 12 frets ( our 12 tone chromatic scale) -- The clock both a metronome and the circle of 4ths and 5ths. This was the mathematical foundation for my life long musical education that led to my eureka moment that the Jazz music I have always been enthralled with lies at the intersection of mathematics and music.
All these years later I realize that everything I perceive including songs are the result of combinatorial mathematics , implication equations and quantum mechanics (did I mention that my dad was a mechanic). The Covid 19 dilemma is a challenge for all of us to reassess our perception of reality. Alvin Toffler said "The illiterate of the 21st century are not those who can not read or write but rather those who can not unlearn and relearn." Music theory , quantum mechanics, biotechnology , A.I. etc -- are not what we assumed them to be in the 20th century (which was a long time ago as Covid has helped us realize)
October 2020
This month I will start explaining polarity theory as I understand it along side more traditional music theory.
1. We have a C maj triad C,E G The distance between C and E is a maj. 3rd
2. The Maj 3rd down from C is A flat
3. The distance between E and G is a min 3rd
4. The mi 3rd below is F
5. Now we have a C maj chord and below it (the reflection) we have a F min chord
6. starting with the A flat with C, E and G we have an A flat Maj7 aug5 chord ( III in F melodic minor)
7. F min is the relative minor of A flat Maj
8. Now C Maj 7 is C, E, G, B the distance from G to B is a Maj 3rd
9. The Maj 3rd down from F is D flat (D flat, F , A flat, C is a D flat maj7)
